It was Grandma's seventieth birthday, and Dad had made a magnificent chocolate cake. He left it on the kitchen table at three o'clock.

Traduction

At four o'clock, the cake had disappeared. Only a few crumbs were left on the plate. "Who has stolen Grandma's cake?" shouted Dad.

Traduction

» cria papa.

Lucy, who loved detective stories, took out her notebook. "Don't worry, Dad. I'll find the thief."

Traduction

First, she questioned her brother Sam. "I was playing football in the garden all afternoon," he said. His trainers were muddy, so he was probably telling the truth.

Traduction

Then she questioned her cousin Emma. "I was reading in my bedroom," said Emma. But Lucy noticed something: there was no chocolate on her face or her hands.

Traduction

Lucy went back to the kitchen and looked carefully. Under the table, she found some brown footprints... small, round footprints with four toes.

Traduction

She followed the footprints into the living room. Behind the sofa, Biscuit the dog was sleeping peacefully, with chocolate all over his nose.

Traduction

"Elementary!" said Lucy proudly. Everybody laughed, even Grandma. "Never mind," she said. "Let's go and buy some ice cream instead!"

Traduction

« Élémentaire ! » dit fièrement Lucy. Tout le monde rit, même mamie. « Ce n'est pas grave, dit-elle. Allons plutôt acheter de la glace ! »
