The "Red-Headed League" offered four pounds a week to a red-haired man for very easy work. Wilson got the job. Every day, from ten to two, he had to sit in an office and copy the Encyclopaedia Britannica by hand.

For eight weeks, everything went well. Then one morning, the office door was locked, with a note: THE RED-HEADED LEAGUE IS DISSOLVED. Wilson was confused and wanted to understand.

Holmes was very interested. He visited Wilson's shop and tapped the pavement with his stick. He noticed that the assistant's trousers were dirty at the knees. Behind the shop was a large bank.

Holmes fut très intéressé. Il se rendit à la boutique de Wilson et tapota le trottoir avec sa canne. Il remarqua que le pantalon de l'assistant était sale aux genoux. Derrière la boutique se trouvait une grande banque.
"The League was only a trick to keep Wilson out of his shop," Holmes explained to Watson. "Meanwhile, his assistant was digging a tunnel from the cellar to the bank's vault!" The assistant was in fact John Clay, a famous criminal.

That night, Holmes, Watson and the police waited in the dark vault. At midnight, a stone in the floor moved, and John Clay climbed out. "It's no use, John Clay," said Holmes calmly. The robbery had failed, thanks to a few simple observations.
