Les prépositions de lieu (in, on, under) décrivent où l'on est. Les prépositions de mouvement décrivent par où ou vers où l'on va.

In ou into ?

The cat is in the kitchen. (position) / The cat ran into the kitchen. (mouvement)
Le chat est dans la cuisine. / Le chat a couru dans la cuisine.

Across ou through ?

Across : d'un bord à l'autre d'une surface (une rue, une rivière, un pont). Through : à l'intérieur d'un volume (une forêt, un tunnel, une foule).

Mise en situation : une course d'orientation

Coach : Run out of the gym, along the river and across the bridge.
Sortez du gymnase, longez la rivière et traversez le pont.
Nina : And then?
Et ensuite ?
Coach : Go through the forest, up the hill, past the old church... and back into the gym!
Traversez la forêt, montez la colline, passez devant la vieille église... et revenez dans le gymnase !

À retenir

  • into / out of, onto, across (surface), through (volume), along, up / down, over, past, around, towards.
  • in = position ; into = mouvement vers l'intérieur.
  • Pour indiquer un chemin : go along, go past, go across, turn left.
