Les noms collectifs et les accords : the police are, the news is

Certains noms anglais ne s'accordent pas comme en français. Ce sont des erreurs très fréquentes, même à l'écrit du bac.

Ces noms ne prennent jamais de s : informations, advices, furnitures.

Les noms collectifs

Team, family, government, staff, class, audience : en anglais britannique, on peut accorder au singulier (le groupe comme un tout) ou au pluriel (les membres) : My family is big / My family are all tall. En anglais américain, on préfère le singulier.

Mise en situation : le départ en voyage

Mum : Is your luggage ready? The taxi is coming.
Tes bagages sont prêts ? Le taxi arrive.
Hugo : Almost. Where are my jeans? And my glasses?
Presque. Où est mon jean ? Et mes lunettes ?
Mum : On the chair. And listen: the news is bad, the police are closing the motorway.
Sur la chaise. Et écoute : les nouvelles sont mauvaises, la police ferme l'autoroute.
Hugo : Thanks for the information. Can I give you a piece of advice? Let's take the train!
Merci pour l'info. Je peux te donner un conseil ? Prenons le train !
