Knowing that Mrs Mallard had heart trouble, her sister Josephine broke the news to her as gently as she could: her husband, Brently, had been killed in a railway accident.
Traduction
She wept at once, with sudden, wild abandonment. Then she went to her room alone, and sat in a comfortable armchair facing the open window.
Traduction
Outside, she could see the tops of trees trembling with new spring life. The air smelled of rain. Someone was singing in the street. Patches of blue sky appeared between the clouds.
Traduction
Slowly, something was approaching her, something she was afraid of. She tried to fight it, but she could not. Then a single word escaped from her lips: "Free, free, free!"
Traduction
She knew she would cry again at the funeral. Her husband had always been kind and loving. But now there would be years ahead that belonged to her alone. She would live for herself, with no one to impose his will on her.
Traduction
At last she opened the door and went downstairs, like a goddess of Victory. Just then, the front door opened. It was Brently Mallard, alive: he had been far from the accident. Mrs Mallard died instantly. The doctors said it was heart disease — "of the joy that kills."
Traduction
