Long ago, there lived a semi-barbaric king who had a very original system of justice. When a man was accused of a crime, he was brought into a huge arena in front of the whole population.

Traduction

In front of him were two identical doors. Behind one was a hungry tiger, which would tear him to pieces. Behind the other was a beautiful lady, whom he would marry immediately. The accused had to choose, and fate would decide if he was guilty or innocent.

Traduction

The king had a beautiful daughter, as passionate and proud as himself. She fell in love with a handsome young man of humble birth. When the king discovered their secret love, the young man was thrown into prison and sent to the arena.

Traduction

Using her power and her gold, the princess discovered the secret of the doors. She also learned who the lady was: one of the most beautiful women of the court, a woman she hated, because she had seen her smile at her lover.

Traduction

On the day of judgement, the young man looked up at the princess. He knew she would know the secret. Quickly and discreetly, she raised her right hand. Without hesitating, he walked to the door on the right and opened it.

Traduction

Did the tiger come out of that door, or did the lady? The princess had thought about it for days and nights: could she bear to see him torn apart, or to see him marry her rival? The author leaves the question to you: which came out of the opened door — the lady, or the tiger?

Traduction
