Hughie Erskine was charming and good-looking, but he had no money and no profession. He was in love with Laura, but her father refused to let them marry until Hughie had ten thousand pounds.

Traduction

One afternoon, Hughie visited his friend Alan Trevor, a painter. Alan was painting a portrait of a beggar: a wrinkled old man dressed in rags, holding out his hand for money.

Traduction

"Poor old man," thought Hughie. "How miserable he looks!" When Alan left the room for a moment, Hughie felt in his pocket. He only had one gold coin, a sovereign, but he slipped it into the beggar's hand.

Traduction

« Pauvre vieillard, pensa Hughie.

That evening, Hughie told Alan what he had done. Alan burst out laughing. "That old beggar is Baron Hausberg, one of the richest men in Europe! He asked me to paint him dressed as a beggar, just for fun."

Traduction

Hughie was horrified. "What a fool I've made of myself!" Alan admitted that he had told the baron all about Hughie, his love for Laura and her father's conditions.

Traduction

Hughie fut horrifié. « Je me suis rendu ridicule !

The next morning, a servant brought Hughie an envelope. On it was written: "A wedding present to Hugh Erskine and Laura Merton, from an old beggar." Inside was a cheque for ten thousand pounds. "Millionaire models are rare enough," said Alan at the wedding, "but model millionaires are rarer still!"

Traduction
