Two years earlier, her twin sister Julia had died suddenly, just before her wedding. On her last night, Julia had heard a strange whistle. Her last words were: "Helen! It was the band! The speckled band!"

Now Helen was engaged too, and she had been moved into her sister's old room. The night before, she had heard the same whistle. Holmes and Watson decided to go to the house immediately.

Holmes examined the room carefully. The bed was fixed to the floor. Above it, there was a small ventilator leading to Dr Roylott's room, and a bell rope that didn't ring any bell. In Roylott's room, he found a saucer of milk and a metal safe.

That night, Holmes and Watson waited in the dark in Helen's room. At three o'clock, they heard a soft whistle. Holmes lit a match and hit the bell rope with his stick. Something slid back through the ventilator. Then a horrible cry came from Roylott's room.

They found Roylott dead in his chair. Around his head was a strange yellow band with brown speckles: a deadly snake from India! Roylott had trained it to climb down the rope to kill his stepdaughters and keep their money. Driven back by Holmes, the snake had bitten its own master.
