"Halloa! Below there!" The narrator shouted down to a man standing next to a railway tunnel, at the bottom of a deep, gloomy cutting. The man was the signal-man, and he seemed strangely afraid of the visitor.
Traduction
The signal-man worked alone in a small box with a fire, a telegraph and a bell. On the narrator's second visit, he finally explained his fear: a ghost kept appearing near the red light at the tunnel entrance.
Traduction
"It stands with one arm across its face, waving the other violently, and it shouts: 'Halloa! Below there! Look out!'" — exactly the words the narrator had used. The first time, a terrible accident happened a few hours later.
Traduction
The second time the ghost appeared, a young woman died on a passing train. Now it had come back again, ringing his bell in a way that nobody else could hear. "What danger is coming?" the poor man asked desperately.
Traduction
« Quel danger arrive ? » demandait désespérément le pauvre homme.
The narrator tried to find a rational explanation and promised to come back. But when he returned the next evening, he saw a group of men at the mouth of the tunnel. The signal-man had been hit by a train.
Traduction
The driver explained: "I saw him on the line. I shouted 'Below there! Look out!' and I put my arm over my eyes so as not to see." The narrator went cold. These were the ghost's exact words and gestures.
Traduction
