"A week without your phone. That's the challenge," said Mr Patel. "Then you'll write about how it felt." The whole class groaned. Jade felt sick. Her phone was her alarm clock, her music, her camera and her connection to all her friends.

« Une semaine sans votre téléphone. Voilà le défi, dit M. Patel. Ensuite, vous écrirez ce que vous avez ressenti. » Toute la classe protesta. Jade se sentit mal. Son téléphone était son réveil, sa musique, son appareil photo et son lien avec tous ses amis.

On Monday, she gave her phone to her mum and immediately felt lost. On the bus, she didn't know where to look. She kept putting her hand in her pocket, looking for something that wasn't there.

By Wednesday, she was bored, so she borrowed a novel from the library. To her surprise, she read a hundred pages in one evening. She hadn't finished a book for two years.

On Thursday, she noticed things she had never seen before: the old man who fed the pigeons every morning, the mural on the wall near school, the way her little brother laughed at his own jokes.

Of course, there were difficult moments. She missed a party because nobody could tell her the address, and she felt left out when her friends talked about a video she hadn't seen.

On Sunday evening, her mum gave her phone back. Jade had 342 notifications. She looked at the screen for a moment, then put the phone on her desk and picked up her book again. "I'll check them tomorrow," she said.
