Roaring Camp was a rough gold-mining camp in California in 1850. About a hundred men lived there: gamblers, fugitives, adventurers. There was only one woman, Cherokee Sal, and she was about to give birth.

Sal died that night, but the baby boy survived. The men queued in silence to see him, and each left a gift: a gold nugget, a silver tobacco box, a diamond ring, a Bible, a revolver. They called him Tommy Luck.

A big, rough miner called Kentuck held the baby's tiny finger. "He rastled with my finger, the little cuss!" he said again and again, deeply moved. Nobody laughed at him.

The men decided to raise the child themselves. Slowly, the camp changed. They stopped shouting and fighting near the cabin. They washed, shaved and put on clean shirts. They even planted flowers.

Gold seemed to come more easily, and the men believed the baby brought them luck. They made plans to build a hotel and bring families to Roaring Camp, so that the Luck would grow up in a decent place.

But the following winter, a terrible flood swept through the valley. In the morning, the men found Kentuck in the river, badly injured, still holding the Luck in his arms. The baby was cold and still. "He's taking me with him," whispered Kentuck, smiling. And the two of them drifted away together.
