It was ten o'clock on a cold, windy night in New York. A policeman on his beat noticed a man standing in the doorway of a dark hardware shop, with an unlit cigar in his mouth.

Traduction

"It's all right, officer," said the man. "I'm waiting for a friend. Twenty years ago, there was a restaurant here, called Big Joe Brady's. I had dinner here with my best friend, Jimmy Wells, the night before I left for the West."

Traduction

"We agreed to meet here again exactly twenty years later, wherever we were. I've travelled a thousand miles to be here tonight. Jimmy was the most loyal friend in the world. He'll come."

Traduction

When he lit his cigar, the policeman saw his face: a pale, square jaw, sharp eyes and a little white scar near his right eyebrow. The man wore a large diamond pin. The policeman wished him good luck and walked on.

Traduction

Twenty minutes later, a tall man in a long coat arrived. "Is that you, Bob?" They shook hands warmly and walked along the street. But under a bright light, Bob stopped. "You're not Jimmy Wells! Twenty years can't change a man's nose!"

Traduction

"You're under arrest, 'Silky' Bob," said the tall man. "Chicago police want you. Here's a note for you." Bob read: "I was at the meeting place on time. When you lit your cigar, I saw the face of the man wanted in Chicago. I couldn't do it myself, so I sent a plain-clothes officer. — Jimmy."

Traduction

— Jimmy. »
