Long ago, the elephant did not have a trunk. He only had a short, fat nose, as big as a boot. One elephant's child was full of curiosity.

Traduction

He asked questions all the time. "Why is the sky blue? Why are the ostrich's feathers so long?" And one day: "What does the crocodile eat for dinner?"

Traduction

Nobody would tell him, so he went to the great grey-green Limpopo River to find out for himself.

Traduction

He met a crocodile on the bank. "Come closer," said the crocodile, "and I'll whisper the answer." The elephant's child bent down... and the crocodile caught him by the nose!

Traduction

The crocodile pulled, and the elephant's child pulled. A kind python helped him, and they pulled and pulled. His nose stretched longer and longer until at last the crocodile let go.

Traduction

His nose was now a long trunk! He could pick fruit from the trees and spray water on his back. When he went home, all the other elephants wanted one too.

Traduction
