Inès answered in her best English. She described her town, her cat Moustache and the croissants from the bakery opposite her flat. She added a drawing of the Eiffel Tower, even though she lived in Lyon.

Every month, they exchanged letters, photos and small presents: a Christmas card, a packet of English tea, a bar of French chocolate. Little by little, Inès's English improved, and so did Tom's French.

In March, a letter arrived with great news: "My class is coming to Lyon in May! Can I stay with you?" Inès was excited, but also nervous. Would she understand him when he spoke quickly?

During the week, she showed him the old town and he tried snails, bravely. On the last day, he gave her a surprise: a jar of homemade Yorkshire pudding mix and an invitation to York next summer. "See you soon, penfriend!"
