At the beginning of the world, when everything was new, the animals started working for Man. But there was one animal who didn't want to work: the Camel.

Traduction

He lived in the middle of the desert, eating sticks and thorns, and doing nothing. When anybody spoke to him, he just said: "Humph!" and nothing more.

Traduction

The Horse came: "Camel, come and trot like us!" "Humph!" said the Camel. The Dog came: "Camel, come and fetch and carry!" "Humph!" The Ox came: "Camel, come and plough!" "Humph!"

Traduction

— Humph ! » Le Bœuf vint : « Chameau, viens labourer ! — Humph ! »

So the three animals had to work extra hard to do the Camel's work too. They were very angry, and they complained to the Djinn in charge of all deserts.

Traduction

The Djinn found the Camel admiring his reflection in a pool. "Why don't you work?" he asked. "Humph!" said the Camel. "Don't say that again," warned the Djinn. "Humph!" said the Camel. And at once, his back puffed up into a great big hump!

Traduction

"That's your humph," said the Djinn. "With it, you can work for three days without eating. Now go and help the others!" And since then, the Camel has always had his hump, but he has never learned to behave.

Traduction
