Hansel and Gretel lived with their father, a poor woodcutter, and their stepmother at the edge of a great forest. There was not enough food for everyone.

Hansel et Gretel vivaient avec leur père, un pauvre bûcheron, et leur belle-mère à l'orée d'une grande forêt. Il n'y avait pas assez à manger pour tout le monde.
One day, their stepmother took them deep into the forest and left them there. Hansel had dropped white pebbles on the way, so they found their way home in the moonlight.

Un jour, leur belle-mère les emmena au fond de la forêt et les y abandonna. Hansel avait semé des petits cailloux blancs en chemin, alors ils retrouvèrent le chemin de la maison au clair de lune.
The next time, Hansel only had breadcrumbs. But the birds ate them all, and the children were lost. After three days, they found a little house made of gingerbread, cake and sweets!

They were so hungry that they started to eat the roof and the windows. Then an old woman opened the door. "Come in, my dears," she said kindly. But she was a wicked witch who wanted to eat them!

She locked Hansel in a cage and made Gretel cook for him. One day, the witch told Gretel to look inside the hot oven. "I don't know how," said Gretel cleverly. "Show me!" When the witch leaned in, Gretel pushed her and shut the door.

Gretel freed her brother. In the house, they found boxes of pearls and jewels. They filled their pockets and found their way home, where their father was overjoyed to see them. They were never hungry again.
