Dans plusieurs versions de la légende (notamment chez Thomas Malory, 1485), Arthur reçoit l'épée Excalibur de la Dame du Lac : une main sort de l'eau en la tenant. À la fin de sa vie, blessé, il demande qu'on la rejette dans le lac, et la main la reprend. Pour raconter : prétérit + first, then, after that, finally.

Mise en situation : la veillée

Grandpa : Do you know how Arthur got Excalibur?
Tu sais comment Arthur a eu Excalibur ?
Mia : No! Tell me!
Non ! Raconte !
Grandpa : First, Arthur and Merlin went to a magic lake. Then a hand rose out of the water, holding a sword.
D'abord, Arthur et Merlin sont allés à un lac magique. Puis une main est sortie de l'eau, tenant une épée.
Mia : Whose hand was it?
À qui était cette main ?
Grandpa : The Lady of the Lake's! She gave the sword to Arthur.
À la Dame du Lac ! Elle a donné l'épée à Arthur.
Mia : And what happened at the end?
Et que s'est-il passé à la fin ?
Grandpa : Finally, when Arthur was dying, a knight threw Excalibur back into the lake, and the hand caught it.
Enfin, quand Arthur était mourant, un chevalier a rejeté Excalibur dans le lac, et la main l'a attrapée.
