Over the past twenty years, the way we buy clothes has changed dramatically. So-called fast fashion brands release new collections every few weeks, at prices that would have been unthinkable a generation ago.
The result? According to many estimates, clothing production has roughly doubled since the early two thousands, while the average number of times a garment is worn before being thrown away has fallen sharply.
The environmental cost is considerable. The fashion industry is a major consumer of water and a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions, and much of our discarded clothing ends up in landfill or is shipped abroad.
There is also a human cost. In 2013, the collapse of the Rana Plaza building in Bangladesh, which housed several garment factories, killed more than a thousand workers and drew worldwide attention to working conditions in the industry.
Yet attitudes may be shifting. Second-hand platforms are booming, especially among young people, and some governments are considering taxes or advertising restrictions on ultra-cheap clothing.
Ultimately, experts agree that the most sustainable garment is the one already in your wardrobe.
