Rudyard Kipling naît en 1865 à Bombay (aujourd'hui Mumbai), en Inde, alors colonie britannique. À cinq ans, il est envoyé en Angleterre pour ses études, où il est très malheureux. De retour en Inde, il devient journaliste. C'est pourtant aux États-Unis, dans le Vermont, qu'il écrit The Jungle Book, publié en 1894, il y a plus de 130 ans. En 1907, il est le premier écrivain de langue anglaise à recevoir le prix Nobel de littérature. Il meurt en 1936.
