Le grand Magicien d'Oz apparaît à chacun sous une forme différente : une tête géante, une belle dame, une bête terrible, une boule de feu... Mais un jour, Toto renverse un paravent : derrière se cache un petit vieil homme ! Il avoue être un « charlatan », un simple homme venu d'Omaha en ballon. Il dit lui-même qu'il est un très bon homme, mais un très mauvais magicien. Au discours indirect, les temps reculent d'un cran : « I am a humbug » → He said that he was a humbug.

Mise en situation : derrière le paravent

Dorothy : Toto knocked over the screen! Who are you?
Toto a renversé le paravent ! Qui êtes-vous ?
Oz : I am Oz, the Great and Terrible... I mean... I'm just a common man.
Je suis Oz, le Grand et Terrible... enfin... je ne suis qu'un homme ordinaire.
Scarecrow : You're not a great wizard? Then you're a humbug!
Vous n'êtes pas un grand magicien ? Alors vous êtes un charlatan !
Oz : Exactly so! I'm a humbug. I've been pretending for years.
Exactement ! Je suis un charlatan. Je fais semblant depuis des années.
Tin Woodman : But how did you appear as a giant head?
Mais comment êtes-vous apparu sous la forme d'une tête géante ?
Oz : Tricks, my friends, only tricks! I'm really a very good man, but I'm a very bad Wizard.
Des tours, mes amis, seulement des tours ! Je suis vraiment un très bon homme, mais un très mauvais magicien.
