Demander poliment : Could you...? Would you mind...? Do you mind if...?

CoursCours d'anglais

FormuleNiveauExemple
Can you + base ?familierCan you pass the salt?
Could you + base ?poliCould you open the window, please?
Would you + base ?poliWould you help me with this bag?
Would you mind + -ing ?très poliWould you mind closing the door?
I was wondering if you could...très poliI was wondering if you could help me.

Demander la permission

FormuleExemple
Can I / Could I + base ?Could I borrow your pen?
May I + base ? (formel)May I come in?
Do you mind if I + présent ?Do you mind if I open the window?
Is it OK if I + présent ?Is it OK if I sit here?

Would you mind helping me? — Not at all! / No, of course not.

Sure! / No problem! ou, pour refuser poliment : I'm sorry, I'm afraid I can't.

Mise en situation : dans le train

Lucas : Excuse me, would you mind moving your bag? I'd like to sit down.
J'aimerais m'asseoir.
Woman : Not at all! Here you are.
Pas du tout ! Je vous en prie.
Lucas : Thank you. Do you mind if I open the window? It's very hot.
Merci.
Woman : No, of course not. Could you tell me when we arrive in York, please?
Lucas : Sure, no problem!
Bien sûr, pas de problème !

À retenir

  • Can you (familier) < Could you / Would you < Would you mind + -ing.
  • Permission : Could I...? May I...? Do you mind if I...?
  • Répondre à « mind » : Not at all! / No, of course not. (= d'accord)
  • Accepter : Of course! Sure! ; refuser : I'm afraid I can't.
