There is / there are (il y a) en anglais

Pour dire « il y a » en anglais, on utilise there is ou there are. Le verbe s'accorde avec ce qui suit.

Singulier ou pluriel ?

La négation

La question et la réponse courte

Is there a park near here? — Yes, there is. / No, there isn't.
Y a-t-il un parc près d'ici ? — Oui. / Non.
Are there any students in the classroom? — Yes, there are.
Y a-t-il des élèves dans la classe ? — Oui.
How many people are there?
Combien de personnes y a-t-il ?

Piège : « il y a » + durée = ago

Quand « il y a » signifie « dans le passé », on utilise ago, placé après la durée :

I met her two years ago.
Je l'ai rencontrée il y a deux ans. (et non there is two years)

À retenir

  • There is + singulier / indénombrable ; there are + pluriel.
  • Négation : there isn't / there aren't (any) / there is no.
  • Question : Is there…? Are there…? How many… are there?
  • « Il y a deux ans » = two years ago.
