| It must be the butler. | C'est forcément le majordome. (presque sûr) |
| It can't be the cook. | Ce n'est sûrement pas la cuisinière. |
| It might be the gardener. | C'est peut-être le jardinier. |
| It could be a trick. | Ça pourrait être une ruse. |
| He must have left early. | Il a dû partir tôt. (déduction au passé) |
| Elementary! | Élémentaire ! |
Échelle de certitude : must (sûr à 95 %) → might / could (possible) → can't (impossible). Fait amusant : la phrase « Elementary, my dear Watson » n'apparaît dans aucun des récits de Conan Doyle ! Holmes dit seulement « Elementary » une fois, dans The Crooked Man.

Mise en situation : le raisonnement
Watson : Who stole the diamond, Holmes?
Qui a volé le diamant, Holmes ?
Holmes : It can't be the cook. She was at the market all morning.
Ce ne peut pas être la cuisinière. Elle était au marché toute la matinée.
Watson : What about the gardener?
Et le jardinier ?
Holmes : It might be him. His boots are muddy... but the garden is always muddy.
C'est peut-être lui. Ses bottes sont boueuses... mais le jardin est toujours boueux.
Watson : And the butler?
Et le majordome ?
Holmes : He has the only key to the safe, and he lied about his alibi. It must be the butler!
Il a la seule clé du coffre, et il a menti sur son alibi. C'est forcément le majordome !
Watson : Brilliant!
Brillant !
Holmes : Elementary.
Élémentaire.
