Holmes et Watson se rencontrent dans le premier roman, A Study in Scarlet (1887). Watson, médecin militaire blessé en Afghanistan, cherche un appartement pas cher. Dès leur rencontre, Holmes lui dit : « You have been in Afghanistan, I perceive. » Watson est stupéfait ! C'est Watson qui raconte presque toutes les aventures.

Bonjour. Je suis le docteur Watson. Je cherche un appartement.
Holmes : You have been in Afghanistan, I perceive.
Vous avez été en Afghanistan, à ce que je vois.
Watson : How on earth did you know that?
Comment diable le saviez-vous ?
Holmes : Your face is tanned, but your wrists are pale. And you're holding your arm stiffly. A wounded army doctor.
Votre visage est bronzé, mais vos poignets sont pâles. Et vous tenez votre bras raide. Un médecin militaire blessé.
Watson : Amazing! Shall we share the flat in Baker Street?
Stupéfiant ! Partageons-nous l'appartement de Baker Street ?
