I'm used to getting up early.J'ai l'habitude de me lever tôt.
I'm getting used to + -ingje m'habitue à
I got used to the weather.Je me suis habitué(e) au temps.
I used to + base verbaleavant, je... (habitude passée)
I can't get used to it!Je n'arrive pas à m'y habituer !

Attention aux trois structures ! Be used to + nom ou -ing = avoir l'habitude : I'm used to the rain. Get used to + nom ou -ing = s'habituer, prendre l'habitude : I'm getting used to driving on the left. Enfin, used to + base verbale (sans be) parle d'une habitude passée qui n'existe plus : I used to live in Paris. Le piège : après be/get used to, le verbe prend -ing, car to est ici une préposition.

Mise en situation : un an à Londres

Clara : How's life in London, Tom?
Comment va la vie à Londres, Tom ?
Tom : Great! But I'm still getting used to the traffic on the left.
Super ! Mais je m'habitue encore à la circulation à gauche.
Clara : And the weather?
Et le temps ?
Tom : Oh, I'm used to the rain now. I used to complain all the time!
Oh, j'ai l'habitude de la pluie maintenant. Avant, je me plaignais tout le temps !
Clara : What about the food?
Et la nourriture ?
Tom : I got used to beans on toast, but I can't get used to dinner at six!
Je me suis habitué aux haricots sur toast, mais je n'arrive pas à m'habituer au dîner à six heures !

À retenir

  • be used to + nom/-ing = avoir l'habitude ; get used to + nom/-ing = s'habituer.
  • used to + base verbale = habitude passée : I used to live in Paris.
