the regeneration of a poor areala rénovation d'un quartier pauvre

Pour évaluer : It's (not) worth it ; the benefits outweigh the costs.

Mise en situation : le débat

Teacher : Should a city host the Olympics? Is it worth it?
Une ville devrait-elle accueillir les JO ? Est-ce que ça en vaut la peine ?
Nina : Yes! London 2012 transformed a poor area in the east of the city. There are new homes and parks.
Oui !
Max : But the Games cost billions of pounds. That money could have been spent on hospitals and schools.
Nina : They also attract tourists and inspire young people to do sport.
Max : Some cities were left with huge debts and empty stadiums: white elephants.
Teacher : So maybe the key question is the legacy. Do the benefits outweigh the costs?
