Teacher : Why do some Native Americans call Thanksgiving a Day of Mourning?
Adam : Because for them, the arrival of the colonists was the beginning of a tragedy: they lost their land, and epidemics killed huge numbers of people.
Lina : Although the feast of 1621 was peaceful, relations got much worse later. There was a terrible war about fifty years after.
Teacher : So should Americans stop celebrating?
Les Américains devraient-ils arrêter de fêter Thanksgiving ?
Adam : I don't think so. While it is true that the story was idealised, the values of gratitude and sharing are positive.
Lina : However, schools should teach the full story and acknowledge the Native American point of view.
