Elles ne se traduisent jamais mot à mot : It's raining cats and dogs veut dire « il pleut des cordes », to let the cat out of the bag veut dire « vendre la mèche ». D'autres ressemblent au français : to kill two birds with one stone (faire d'une pierre deux coups).
