Most ou most of ?

C'est l'erreur la plus fréquente : on ne dit pas the most of people ni most of people.

FormeEmploiExemple
most + nom (sans the)la plupart, en généralMost people like music. Most teenagers have a phone.
most of + the / my / these + nomla plupart d'un groupe précisMost of the students in my class are 15.
most of + pronomla plupart d'entreMost of them live nearby. Most of us agree.

Les autres quantifieurs

AnglaisFrançaisExemple
all (of) thetous les, tout leAll (of) the shops were closed.
half (of) thela moitié deHalf (of) the class was absent.
some ofcertains de, une partie deSome of my friends are coming.
many of / a lot ofbeaucoup deMany of them were tired.
a few ofquelques-uns deA few of us stayed.
none ofaucun deNone of my friends came.
both (of)les deuxBoth (of) my parents work.
neither of / either ofaucun des deux / l'un ou l'autreNeither of them knows.

None of est négatif : pas de not dans la phrase (None of them didn't come). Avec all, both, half, le of est facultatif devant the / my, mais obligatoire devant un pronom : all of us, both of them.

Mise en situation : les résultats d'un sondage

Teacher : So, what did your survey show?
Alors, qu'a montré votre sondage ?
Sophie : Most of the students in our school have a smartphone. Half of them use it more than four hours a day!
La plupart des élèves de notre lycée ont un smartphone. La moitié d'entre eux l'utilisent plus de quatre heures par jour !
Teacher : And did anyone not have one?
Et est-ce que certains n'en avaient pas ?
Sophie : A few of them. But none of the people we asked wanted to live without it.
Quelques-uns. Mais aucune des personnes interrogées ne voulait s'en passer.

À retenir

  • most + nom (en général) ; most of the + nom (groupe précis) ; jamais the most of.
  • half of, some of, a few of, none of, both of + the / my / pronom.
  • None of = aucun : pas de not.
  • of obligatoire devant un pronom : all of us, both of them.
