Connecteurs de contraste : whereas, while, unlike, however, at first... gradually...

Mise en situation : le cours de littérature

Teacher : What contrast does Gaskell show in North and South?
Quel contraste Gaskell montre-t-elle dans North and South ?
Sara : The South is rural and peaceful, whereas the North is industrial, noisy and polluted.
Teacher : And how does Margaret see Mr Thornton at first?
Hugo : She despises him. She thinks he's a hard, money-loving mill owner who doesn't care about his workers.
Sara : But during the strike, she sees he's braver than she thought. And he learns to listen to the workers.
Teacher : So both of them gradually change their minds. Unlike many novels of the time, it gives a voice to workers too.
