It was a dark and stormy night.C'était une nuit sombre et orageuse.
I was walking home when I heard...Je rentrais à pied quand j'ai entendu...
Suddenly / All of a suddenSoudain / Tout à coup
a shadowune ombre
to shiver / to tremblefrissonner / trembler
My heart was beating fast.Mon cœur battait vite.

Pour une histoire qui fait peur : le prétérit en -ing pose le décor (The wind was howling, I was walking...), le prétérit simple raconte l'action soudaine (...when I saw a shadow). Les mots suddenly, then, at that moment créent le suspense.

Mise en situation : la veillée

Hugo : OK, listen. It was a dark and stormy night. I was walking home alone...
Bon, écoutez. C'était une nuit sombre et orageuse. Je rentrais seul à pied...
Clara : And then?
Et ensuite ?
Hugo : The wind was howling and my heart was beating fast. Suddenly, I saw a shadow behind me!
Le vent hurlait et mon cœur battait vite. Soudain, j'ai vu une ombre derrière moi !
Clara : What was it?
C'était quoi ?
Hugo : I turned around very slowly... and it was my neighbour's cat!
Je me suis retourné très lentement... et c'était le chat du voisin !
Clara : Ha ha! You really scared me!
Ha ha ! Tu m'as vraiment fait peur !

À retenir

  • Prétérit en -ing (décor) + prétérit simple (action) : I was walking when I saw...
  • suddenly, all of a sudden, then, at that moment, a shadow, to shiver.
