deep-sea miningl'exploitation minière des grands fonds marins
The seabed is covered with metallic nodules.
They contain cobalt and nickel, used in batteries.
Deep-sea ecosystems are fragile and poorly understood.
Some countries are calling for a moratorium.Certains pays réclament un moratoire.
Should we damage the ocean in order to save the climate?

Expression du but : in order to, so as to, so that.

Mise en situation : le débat

Teacher : Why do companies want to mine the deep sea?
Ines : Because the seabed is covered with nodules that contain cobalt and nickel. We need them for electric car batteries.
Teacher : So it could help the fight against climate change?
Oscar : In theory. But scientists say deep-sea ecosystems are fragile and poorly understood. We keep discovering new species down there.
Ines : And the damage could last for centuries. Should we destroy one ecosystem in order to save the planet? That's a paradox!
Oscar : That's why many countries are calling for a moratorium, so that scientists have time to study the ocean first.
